DeVon announced on IG that he’s acting in Lionsgate & Kingdom Story Company’s Jesus Revolution with a heartfelt and vulnerable story of how he ended up getting the role.
He shared on instagram:
When they came to me to ask me to act in this movie, at first I was going to say …”I can’t act”, but then I felt God saying “How do you know you can’t?”
Before I continue sharing this story, can I just say, I was doubting myself! Have you ever been there before when someone has asked you to do something that you didn’t know you could do, and your fear almost robbed you of that opportunity? If your answer is yes, then you know how I was feeling.
Before I turned them down, I asked to read the script and I was moved by this incredible true story of one of the greatest spiritual revolutions of our time. Speaking of Time, the part I play is a reporter named Josiah who worked for Time Magazine. In 1971, Time Magazine did a cover story on the Jesus Revolution.
I was terrified but I said “OK” — I immediately got with an acting coach and worked with my assistant, @Bmeraki to learn my lines.
I worked for months to get ready for this role. And then once I got to set, some of the scenes I had studied were changed and I had to relearn the lines — on the fly.
The part that was amazing to me, was after I finished one of the scenes, someone came up to me and said “that was great, how long have you been an actor?” — I almost LOL and said “I’m not” … but I caught myself and said “I’M JUST GETTING STARTED.” 👊🏽💪🏽
I share this with you for 2 reasons:
— I want to encourage you to not speak a negative word about who you are or who you aren’t.
— Don’t be afraid to try new aka true things. You all might see it and say “DeVon stick to your day job,” and that’s OK. It was exhilarating to do something I’d never done before.
You have so many gifts, don’t let your previous understanding of who you are hinder the truth of who you’re becoming. #DFTruestYear
